Fish Factory, Wellington

Posted on October 08, 2014 by Jo Freeman

In the 1970s, George Katsoulis, an innovative Greek Romanian immigrant, opened a small retail fish shop in Cuba St Wellington called the Fish Factory, supplying locally caught fish to Wellington residents along with traditional kiwi fish & chips. The Fish Factory was the first fish shop to offer crumbed fish to customers in Wellington. Since then the Fish Factory has evolved, moving away from retail in the 1990s into the wholesale supply of fish to supermarkets and some of Wellington's best restaurants.

But the Fish Factory is still a family business and remains true to its core philosophy of sourcing the freshest fish from local fisherman for its customers. Butterfish is sourced from two Wellington fishermen, Blue Cod from the Chathams, line caught Groper from near Motuaka and Snapper and Tarakihi from Gisborne and elsewhere in NZ. Fish is caught using a variety of methods both long line and trawling. But in every case the priority for Stefan from the Fish Factory is to ensure the fish reaches the end user in the best & freshest condition possible

To ensure you get the freshest fish available, fish will be filleted & delivered to you as soon as possible after being caught. This means that Stefan from the Fish Factory might not know what fish is available until the Sunday before your Monday delivery & well after the Thursday order deadline. So please note your fish variety preferences in the delivery instructions and we will do our best to ensure you receive the fish requested. You can order fish in 200g portions, boned and with skin off. A normal adult portion of fish is around 150-200gms and for a child is approximately 100gms.

Make sure you add some Fish Factory fillets to your Urban Harvest bag. You won't be disappointed... it is so fresh you can almost taste the sea!
