Lewis Road Creamery

Posted on November 04, 2014 by Jo Freeman

Lewis Road Creamery are on a mission. To create the worlds best dairy produce right here in New Zealand. And we think they're well on the way to achieving their mission!

The team at Lewis Road Creamery are all about quality over quantity and take their dairy produce seriously. They began with a little Dutch churn in a converted shipping container in Lewis Road, Bay of Plenty, and now have a dedicated creamery at Mangatawhiri. Their range of milk products are all certified organic by AsureQuality and are free from permeate. Their happy cows are not fed palm kernel expeller (PKE) and produce a milk that is rich, creamy and provides a "from the farm gate" taste experience. The difference in taste is truly remarkable.

Lewis Road Creamery Organic Milk comes in four varieties – Non-Homogenised, Homogenised, Light and Calcium Enriched Low-Fat (a mix of Jersey and Friesian milks). Each product is housed in a retro-inspired 100 percent recyclable milk bottle through which you can see what you are drinking and how much is left in the bottle.

Kingsmeade Cheese, Masterton

Posted on August 19, 2014 by Jo Freeman

Since 1998, artisan cheesemakers Miles and Janet King have quietly created a broad range of supreme ewe and cow's milk cheeses on their idyllic 30-acre farm on the outskirts of Masterton in the Wairarapa. Kingsmeade started out making ewe’s milk cheeses with milk sourced from their own flock of East Friesian sheep. Later, cow’s milk (from cows on a neighbouring farm) and blended cheeses were added to the range.

Calm and quietly spoken, Miles is hands-on – from the first steamy breath of the newborn lambs to the twice-daily milking, cheesemaking, cutting and packaging. Wild herbs like chicory, plantain and lucerne cover broad, green meadows where the sheep graze – they are big, contented and full of personality – no need to round them up at milking time, they hear Miles’ voice and come on their own. Each batch of cheese is handmade in the small factory on the farm which makes for delightful subtle differences.

Compared to cow or goat's milk, sheep milk can often be consumed by the lactose intolerant, it can ease asthma & excema, and very likely lowers blood pressure. It is richer in vitamins, proteins and amino acids as well as the right kinds of fats, ie: Omega 3 and 6.

Kingsmeade believes that contented animals, gently cared for, will produce the finest cheese. "Our sheep are truly contented – well looked after and well fed on lush green pastures. You can taste it in our cheese.”

Kingmeade Cheese are winners of the Supreme Award of the Mindfood Producer's Awards 2014.

Feast & Vine Scream-Licious Ice-cream, Wellington

Posted on March 05, 2014 by Jo Freeman

It's hard to forget your first ice cream cone. Donna McCormack of Wellington's Feast & Vine Scream-licious Ice Cream thinks of hand churned ice cream & handmade cones as the ultimate comfort food. A feeling that probably goes back to her rural upbringing in Northern California. That is where her interest in the study of tastes & flavours, wine & food matching and cooking in general began.

Donna's philosophy about ingredients is really very simple - make sure you eat the real stuff and the freshest local ingredients you can find - like real butter, real eggs and real vanilla. The kind of ingredients that you find at Urban Harvest, ingredients and produce from farm to table suppliers, just the way Donna has always liked it too.

With Donna's collection of small batch savoury scream-licious ice creams, and cone-licious orange zest hand crafted cones, Donna hopes the Urban Harvest family will be delighted to explore unique ice cream flavours & tastes for a new sensory experience.

From 1 November 2014, the following hand-crafted flavours will be available online via Urban Harvest or at Donna's Friday scoop shop at Urban Harvest HQ in Hania St (from 2-4pm):

  • Chunky Chocolate
  • Honey Vanilla

  • Bourbon Vanilla with Salted Pecans (new!)
  • Tequila & Lime (new!)

Click here to pop a tub in your bag for delivery after 1 November. They will be available to order online from 24 October 2014.

Donna has studied tastes & flavours, wine & food matching and other culinary principals around the world and most notably at the Culinary Institute of America, Napa Valley. Donna has lived and worked in San Fransisco, Oslo, New York City and Hong Kong and has spent extensive time throughout Asia & Europe attending various culinary schools, courses & seminars. This is her first ice cream product range drawing from years of international taste & flavour study. We are delighted to have Donna & her Scream-licious ice cream as part of the Urban Harvest family.
