If you live in Wellington, you may have seen third generation dumpling queen Vicky Ha whizzing around the CBD on her dumpling delivery bike.
And this dumpling queen definitely knows her dumplings! Growing up in Hong Kong, Vicky would often sit around her living room making dumplings with her mother and sister and soon developed her magic touch. As a teen athelete, she used to eat 30 dumplings in one sitting! "Even now, they are still my ultimate comfort food" says Vicky.
From Hong Kong, Vicky moved with her family to Dunedin to finish high school and later attained a Bachelor of Consumer Applied Science at Otago University. Then, after various jobs in Wellington (running a bicycle taxi, lifeguarding & dishwashing), she retrained at Weltec as a chef. After a character building stint, cooking for the crew of a prawn trawler off northern Australia, Vicky had enough saved to open her own business, the House of Dumplings, in 2012.
Vicky now makes her authentic, delicious, handmade dumplings with 100% natural, free range & MSG Free ingredients in her Taranaki St kitchen with two fellow chefs. She makes the skins from scratch, using nothing more than flour, water & a touch of turmeric for colour. And many of her ingredients are sourced from local farms such as Longbush Free Range Pork. To complete the picture, Vicky has also crafted three sauces to match her dumplings - a house-made ksundi, a chilli oil with a great "kick" and the soy & vinegar based "Mum's Sauce".
