House of Dumplings, Wellington

Posted on July 01, 2014 by Jo Freeman

If you live in Wellington, you may have seen third generation dumpling queen Vicky Ha whizzing around the CBD on her dumpling delivery bike.

And this dumpling queen definitely knows her dumplings! Growing up in Hong Kong, Vicky would often sit around her living room making dumplings with her mother and sister and soon developed her magic touch. As a teen athelete, she used to eat 30 dumplings in one sitting! "Even now, they are still my ultimate comfort food" says Vicky.

From Hong Kong, Vicky moved with her family to Dunedin to finish high school and later attained a Bachelor of Consumer Applied Science at Otago University. Then, after various jobs in Wellington (running a bicycle taxi, lifeguarding & dishwashing), she retrained at Weltec as a chef. After a character building stint, cooking for the crew of a prawn trawler off northern Australia, Vicky had enough saved to open her own business, the House of Dumplings, in 2012.

Vicky now makes her authentic, delicious, handmade dumplings with 100% natural, free range & MSG Free ingredients in her Taranaki St kitchen with two fellow chefs.  She makes the skins from scratch, using nothing more than flour, water & a touch of turmeric for colour. And many of her ingredients are sourced from local farms such as Longbush Free Range Pork. Each parcel of perfection is a complete flavour explosion. Think Shanghai Free Range Pork & Savoy Cabbage, Nepalese Spiced Lamb & Five Veges or Crystal Prawns & Garlic Chives.

To complete the picture, Vicky has also crafted three sauces to match her dumplings - a house-made ksundi, a chilli oil with a great "kick" and the soy & vinegar based "Mum's Sauce".

And now, with Urban Harvest, you can get Vicky's dumplings (& sauces) delivered to your door! They come frozen and can be steamed (8 mins), poached (5 mins) or panfried (10 mins) to create a delicious midweek dinner or a starter for your next dinner party.

Spoon Me, Wellington

Posted on June 16, 2014 by Jo Freeman

Jenny Huxley from Spoon Me makes delicious, nutritious & gorgeous looking salads boxed up & ready to eat on the go. Her salads are made with the freshest vegetables and herbs & wholesome grains or legumes making an ideal meal for one or a wonderful side dish for the family meal. Think white beans with feta, sumac, chilli & silverbeet or puy lentils with roasted parsnip, kumara, cherry tomatoes & thyme.

Although Jenny has a background in performing arts & fashion, she was inspired to change her career in 2005 as a result of her annual wwoofing holidays in Europe, South America & India. She then undertook a biodynamic apprenticeship to support her interest in organics, Rudolph Steiner & nutrition and soon began growing heirloom vegetables for the London Borough Market.

Since then, Jenny has had plenty of experience working with food. She has spent 10 years working in all facets of hospitality, managing restaurants, organising events and, most recently since immigrating to NZ, managing a production kitchen for an iconic Wellington Cafe.

"Essentially I make the kind of food I would wish to buy if I was eating on the go or as a great take home option to accompany a beautiful piece of protein. I try to find creative alternatives without compromising on taste or exploiting food fads."

Jenny has a simple food philosophy; we are what we eat and if we can't identify what we're eating then we shouldn't be eating it!

Jenny currently makes two types of salads - vegan & vegetarian - in two sizes. The flavours change weekly and will be posted online each Monday for the following Monday delivery.
